Architect of the Capitol – Painting of the West Face of the Capitol

  • Client: HITT Contracting
  • Description: KEM worked with HITT to provide lead safe work practices and testing during re-painting of the west front of the U.S. Capitol Building prior to President Obama’s inauguration. Repainting required stabilization of chipping and peeling lead-based paint as part of the project. KEM developed a lead-safe work plan for HITT which was approved by the Architect of the Capitol. Once the work started, KEM provided exposure monitoring and testing to assure that the exposures were below the OSHA PEL for lead.

Columbia Plaza Apartments – various asbestos abatement projects

  • Client: Columbia Plaza Limited Partnership
  • Description: This apartment facility, located adjacent to the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., consists of five residential buildings and a large retail complex containing restaurants, shops, stores and other services. KEM has conducted asbestos surveys, prepared an Operations and Maintenance plan, written abatement specifications, and provided project management and air monitoring during asbestos abatement activities throughout this complex.

Silver Spring Gateway, Veridian Apartments, Silver Spring, MD

  • Client: Turner Construction
  • Description: KEM provided Turner with a written Water Intrusion Management Program (WIMP) in accordance with specification requirements for the project. As a part of the program, KEM provided training of all superintendents on the project, provided bi-weekly inspections and reports, and prvided a certification that the building was fit for occupancy.

Boston Convention and Exhibition Center

  • Client: Clark Construction Group
  • Description: KEM worked with Clark Construction Group during the construction of the BCEC to identify and remediate mold, and provide testing to assure that each area of mold remediation was fit for occupancy. The BCEC, the largest convention center in the U.S.A. at the time of construction, had significant roof leak problems during the course of construction, resulting in water and mold damage. KEM worked to assure that mold was identified, properly remediated and that all workers and subcontractors were safe during the efforts.

Four Seasons Hotel, Washington, DC

  • Client: Four Seasons Hotel
  • Description: KEM has worked for the Four Seasons Hotel for a number of years as the on-call environmental engineering firm. KEM has addressed indoor air quality concerns, water quality concerns and mold concerns. With each assignment, KEM has responded promptly and professionally and has brought resolution to the concern as quickly as possible.

J. Edgar Hoover Building – FBI Headquarters, Washington, DC

  • Client: John C. Grimberg Construction
  • Description: KEM worked with Grimberg during a renovation of 3 floors of floors of former laboratory space to office space. Laboratory decommissioning included clean-up and decontamination of lead, mercury, explosives and other heavy metals before other construction could proceed to convert these areas to general office space. KEM has provided continuing services to decontaminate the firing range in the building.
